San Diego Flyer + COASTER

Take the airport’s free electric shuttle to Old Town Transit Center. From there, board a northbound COASTER train and get off at the Carlsbad station closest to your final address. This avoids a downtown transfer and keeps the route relatively simple.

Choose this when: your flight lands while the COASTER is operating, you can manage your luggage across a platform transfer, and your destination is near a Carlsbad station or a short local ride away.

Useful downtown alternative

Route 992 + COASTER

MTS Route 992 serves both airport terminals and connects the airport with downtown San Diego. Transfer at Santa Fe Depot to a northbound COASTER. This is useful when downtown is part of your trip, but it normally adds more city travel than the Old Town connection.

Choose this when: the Flyer timing does not suit you, or you want to stop downtown before continuing north.

Door-to-door convenience

Rideshare, taxi or rental car

Authorized app-based ride services and taxis operate at SAN. Rental cars are collected at the airport’s consolidated Rental Car Center, reached by a free shuttle. Direct road travel is simpler with children, mobility equipment or several bags, but cost and journey time vary with traffic.

Choose this when: you arrive after useful train service, your lodging is far from either Carlsbad station, or minimizing transfers matters most.

Step-by-step

Check today’s COASTER schedule before leaving baggage claim. NCTD schedules can change, and service is less frequent than an urban metro.
Follow signs for the San Diego Flyer. The airport describes this as a free, accessible electric shuttle between the terminals and Old Town Transit Center.
At Old Town, find the northbound COASTER platform. Buy or activate the correct NCTD fare before boarding, using the current NCTD instructions.
Select the right Carlsbad stop. Carlsbad Village Transit Center is at 2775 State Street; Carlsbad Poinsettia Station is at 6511 Avenida Encinas.
Plan the final mile. Confirm whether your lodging is walkable, served by local transit, or better reached by a short taxi or rideshare.

Make the route work door to door

Carlsbad Village or Poinsettia?

Do not treat the two Carlsbad stations as interchangeable. Carlsbad Village Transit Center is the natural first check for the Village, the downtown street grid and nearby coastal addresses. Carlsbad Poinsettia is several miles farther south and can be more practical for destinations around southern Carlsbad. Enter both station addresses in a map with your lodging before you travel. A shorter rail trip can still create a longer, more expensive final ride.

If somebody is meeting you, agree on the exact station name in writing. “Carlsbad station” is ambiguous. Share the scheduled train and update your contact if a flight or connection delay changes it.

Build a schedule that can survive a delay

Start with your flight’s realistic arrival, then add time for taxiing, walking through the terminal, baggage claim and finding the shuttle. Compare that result with the live COASTER departures—not the flight’s scheduled touchdown. If the connection is tight, identify the next train and a direct-car fallback before boarding the airport shuttle.

Travelers using Route 992 should separately allow for the bus ride to Santa Fe Depot and the walk to the correct rail platform. Keep the NCTD schedule open until you board. Service notices can matter more than the normal timetable.

Tickets, bags and the last mile

Use NCTD’s current fare page to select and activate the required fare; this guide intentionally does not freeze a price that can change. Keep enough phone battery for the ticket, schedule and final-mile booking. If you use a ticket vending machine, finish before the train arrives rather than relying on time at the platform.

Place bags where they do not block doors, aisles or accessible spaces. At your Carlsbad stop, pause before ordering a ride so you can choose the correct pickup side. If walking, check the whole route for sidewalks, crossings and elevation—not only the straight-line distance.
